CAR INSURANCE

The hard way to buy car insurance

Anyone over 30 will remember what an awful thing trying to get car insurance used to be. You had to set aside several hours, get out the yellow pages and call around for quotes. This involved giving all your details in full each time and then either waiting on hold while someone on the other end did their sums or waiting for them to call back later with a quote and hoping you weren't on the phone to another insurer when they did. It was interminably boring.

That's why most of us love comparison websites. Today finding a cheap quote takes a matter of minutes. Visit Confused, MoneySupermarket, or Go Compare type in your details and you are pretty much done. And not just with your car insurance. These comparison sites list everything from the best deals on gas and telephones to the best ones on life and building insurance.

5 Reasons to Buy a Used Car

For many, it's a wonderful intoxicant, one that lures them back to their favorite car dealer as soon as it fades from their most recent purchase.

But as with other intoxicants, getting hooked on that aroma can be an expensive habit. Two years after your purchase, long after the scents of newness have faded, your new car will have lost a ton of value -- 30% or more, on average. Combine that with the additional hit you'll take if you trade it in rather than sell it yourself, and you could be losing almost half of what you paid for that beast just two years ago.

If, on the other hand, you can live without the robust fragrance of alkanes, benzenes, and aldehydes during your morning commute, then you're in luck. A well-chosen used car can be a reliable, fun, and Foolish purchase that can give you years of (relatively) low-cost service.

Women choosing 'wrong footwear'

Women's car insurance customers are risking having to make claims by wearing the wrong footwear, according to the results of a new survey. The Safes Shoes report, compiled on behalf of insurer Sheilas' Wheels, revealed that 70 per cent of Welsh female motorists wear the wrong kind of shoes when behind the wheel. Two thirds of those quizzed admitted to driving while wearing heels, while almost a third said they regularly wore flip-flops to drive.Dianne Ferreira, spokeswoman for road safety charity Brake, was surprised so many drivers were increasing their risk of an accident and having to claim on their women's car insurance by prioritising fashion over safety."High heels, platforms and flip-flops can seriously hamper your ability to drive safely, and could have fatal consequences. It only takes a few seconds to change your shoes before each journey to help ensure you arrive safely," she said.Last month, an expert witness told a court in Essex that a woman driver's high heels had probably been a contributory factor in her losing control of her car during a fatal accident.Kwik-Fit Insurance provides its female customers with £150 personal belongings cover as part of their women's car insurance policy.© Adfero Ltd

Car insurance revisited

One of the lessons in Legislating 101 is that when your bill doesn't have the votes, don't just throw it to the wolves. There's little reason to press ahead with something headed for certain defeat -- take it back to the lab and try to make it something your colleagues can swallow without gagging.State Sen. Tony Rand of Fayetteville hardly needs to be reminded of a rule so elementary. After all, if there were a doctorate in the legislative arts, he'd have about three. So it was no surprise to hear that Rand tactfully has decided to defer a proposal that made many ordinary North Carolinians' hair stand on end. Those would be North Carolinians who buy car insurance, of which there are a bunch. This had been a classic case of moving to fix something that wasn't busted. Rand wanted to take away the state insurance commissioner's authority to set auto insurance rates.
