| We're being fined for parking in our yards!
With all the talk of budget woes of the last few weeks, I have a suggestion that works better than raising taxes or adding flat fees to already expensive utilities in Bowling Green and Warren County.Over the last few weeks, I had scheduled some estimates for the widening and resurfacing of my driveway. I parked my car in my own yard, directly next to my driveway, so the men who were giving me an estimate could visualize what I wanted. Then, this week, the “officials" from the Housing and Community Development Department took a picture of my house and car and issued a warning for me to move my car before June 18, or I'd be required to pay a $50 fine.As a homeowner for 40 years who has the lawn cared for weekly, plants lovely flowers to help beautify the neighborhood, and keeps my property looking clean and well-kept, I find this appalling.
A Car Rental Insurance Tip
My friends Bob and Donna ignored my advice and paid for CDW coverage on a rental car. I'd say that was the wrong move, except that they got into a minor accident and the coverage saved them some trouble and money. Still, I'm not going to recommend buying the CDW (collision damage waiver) from a car rental company. If you're not comfortable with the coverage provided under your personal car insurance and your credit card company, there's an alternative. For our recent European trip, I bought a renter's collision insurance policy from TravelGuard. For $9 a day it provided $35,000 worth of collision coverage with a $250 deductible. That was about half the rate with a much lower deductible than the car rental agency was offering. Normally, I don't bother with the CDW at all because I'm satisfied with the coverage provided by my own auto insurance and my credit card. I'm also mindful of the many warnings from consumer advocates that the insurance sold by car rental companies may duplicate coverage the renter already has.

Car insurance on expired licenses?
Following up on the question regarding driving license renewals on weekends, it is comforting to hear the response of Supakorn Wilairat, Chief of the license issuing section at the PPLTO.
The Issue & Answer explained that you must wait until your license expires to renew it, and if that should happen over a weekend, you must wait until the following weekday to renew the license. In her response, she said, traffic police are usually understanding if they catch you driving on a license that has only recently expired
However, it would be useful to know if insurance companies are equally understanding. In my case, as my license expires on Saturday, I must either stay home on the following Sunday or rely on the usual understanding of the traffic police.
Although I am confident that K, Supakorn must be correct in her evaluation of the common-sense approach of the police, it would be useful if the Phuket Gazette could elicit comment from a leading car insurer.
