| ABD: All distractions put car insurance at risk
The Association of British Drivers (ABD) has said that individual bans on anything that can be considered a risk to car insurance through distraction to the driver is a "ridiculous" idea.Responding to calls by the Local Authority Road Safety Officers' Association to ban smoking behind the wheel, the ABD has said that it would not be practical to ban every distracting driving factor."Almost everything one does in a car 'can' be dangerously distracting if not done in a sensible manner," said ABD chairman Brian Gregory. The organisation states that producing separate bans for each activity would be "ridiculous" and result in "a massive increase in frivolous prosecutions".Rather than trying to keep lives and motor insurance premiums intact with bans, the organisation states that a crackdown on those deploying such activities irresponsibly would be more effective.According to comparison site uSwitch.com, some firms already take smoking into account when calculating an individual's motor insurance premium.Research conducted last year found that motor insurance customers could save up to £231.92 with Kwik-Fit Insurance.© Adfero Ltd Other Recent Motor Insurance ArticlesSlow down to save on motor insurance Education the key for police Suffolk drivers avoiding motor insurance claims .
Boy Racers Prompt Compulsory Car Insurance Rethink
The Government is actively considering making third-party insurance for cars compulsory as part of renewed efforts to curb boy racing.Transport Safety Minister Harry Duynhoven says the impact of a poor driving record on insurance premiums could change driver behaviour.Officials were already working on the proposal and its practicalities, he said today.Mr Duynhoven was commenting on calls from the Mayoral Taskforce for tougher measures to curb dangerous driving by young drivers following the death of 20-year-old Scott Finn during an illegal drag race in Tauranga at the weekend and a hit and run in Christchurch that killed two teenage partygoers. The mayors also called for a comprehensive review of driver licensing and purchase terms for high performance cars for drivers under 20.Mr Duynhoven said most countries that required third-party vehicle insurance did not have the same problem with boy racers as those without such a regime, he said.“People realise they are not in a position to drive if they have a lot of speeding tickets, a lot of vehicle offences or have a vehicle which is modified .
Traffic jams pose car insurance risks
British drivers could risk more than their motor insurance premiums when they drive dangerously as a result of traffic jams, according to a new survey.Motor insurance provider Zurich claimed that Britons waste two weeks of their life stuck in traffic, with resultant boredom and frustration putting road users at risk.Almost a third polled said they would use their mobile phone in such a case, while 17 per cent would get out of their vehicle to stretch their legs. Meanwhile, traffic jams were found to lead to road rage too, with more than a quarter swearing at other drivers. One in ten admitted to attempting risky manoeuvres to make a getaway from traffic. The car insurance firm's head of motor underwriting Roy Seeds advised drivers to check travel news before setting off on their journey. However, if they do get caught up in traffic, car insurance customers should refrain from getting frustrated and find a way to remain "calm and alert".He added: "Risking a quick escape from a queue may look like short term gain, but could end up in long-term pain if you get caught."According to the RAC, congestion hotspots include the northern, eastern and western sectors of the M25, the M1 through Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire, and the M6, in particular between the M6 Toll and in the Birmingham area.Three in four motor insurance customers could save on their cover with Kwik-Fit Insurance, according to research conducted last year.© Adfero Ltd Other Recent Motor Insurance ArticlesSlow down to save on motor insurance Education the key for police Suffolk drivers avoiding motor insurance claims .
