Motorists urged to select the right car insurance

Many UK motorists are paying above average fees for their car insurance, new research from Insurancewide.com has claimed. According to the UK car insurance comparison tool, many drivers could pay less and be more protected through a fully comprehensive policy rather than paying for third party cover. Figures showed that drivers aged over 35 with cars worth less than £2,500 are paying around £200 more when on third party cover, compared to a fully comprehensive policy on their motor insurance. Commenting, insurancewide.com chief executive James Harrison said "doing your homework could save you hundreds of pounds". For motorists with several claims and convictions, a fully comprehensive policy would still be of benefit since a third party would charge "an arm and a leg" for car insurance anyway.

Drivers opting for eco-car insurance

Motorists are gaining increasing access to competitively priced environmentally-friendly car insurance, it has been suggested.According to a study conducted by moneysupermarket.com, more insurers are providing reasonably priced cover to drivers concerned about their carbon footprint.Director of insurance Richard Mason said: "Many drivers are concerned about their impact on the environment and in an effort to go green have been tempted to opt for eco-friendly insurance."Earlier this year, Mr Mason advised that unless firms lower the price of green premiums, drivers should look around for a competitively priced insurance product which most suits their needs and donate any extra savings towards environmentally-friendly causes.Meanwhile, sales of hybrid cars are set to double in Britain over the course of 2007, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.Earlier this week, a study by emedia indicated 34 per cent of tourists would be willing to spend more money to offset the impact they make on the environment while away. However, Robin Bailey, Nationwide insurance director has warned all tourists to ensure that some of their holiday budget goes towards a comprehensive travel insurance policy to help protect themselves against medical emergencies or cancelled flights.© Adfero Ltd

Uninsured drivers targeted

Using data supplied by the Motorists Insurance Bureau, police targeted drivers they suspected of being on the road without any car insurance. The month-long crackdown resulted in 120 drivers being caught out and, as well as having their vehicles seized, they now face prosecution, which could see them hit with a £5,000 fine and eight penalty points.Chief inspector Nick Elton, Wiltshire Police's head of roads policing, was delighted his officers had managed to remove some potentially dangerous drivers from the roads."Drivers who drive without insurance are nine times more likely to be involved in a collision as opposed to a driver who does have insurance," he said.He added that statistics showed that uninsured drivers are six times more likely to be at the wheel of a non-roadworthy car and that many of them had convictions for careless or drink-related motoring offences.Drivers without insurance were involved in 36,000 collisions during 2006 and the Association of British Insurers estimates that the cost of those accidents results in safe, law abiding motorists paying an extra £30 each on their car insurance premiums.Three in four motor insurance customers could save on their cover with Kwik-Fit Insurance, according to research conducted last year.© Adfero Ltd

Females risking their women's car insurance premiums?

A recent study has shown that female drivers may increasingly be risking their women's car insurance premiums through risk-taking behaviour.Researchers from the University of California found a rise in the number of women drivers who were found to have been drinking at the wheel, while they were also shown to be less likely to wear a seatbelt and more likely to have an accident while on a mobile phone, reports News24.com.In a presentation made to the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine in Chicago, the researchers said that "the tendencies amongst women are not positive".The scientists studied 139,000 accidents involving individuals aged between 16 and 24 in which someone died and found a recent increase of 1.3 per cent in the number of incidents involving women and alcohol.Earlier this year, a study by Australian insurance firm AAMI found that female drivers may be less likely to claim on their women's car insurance as they were not as likely as men to drive after drinking alcohol. Some 80 per cent of female motorists could save on their women's car insurance with Kwik-Fit Insurance, a study from last year has shown.© Adfero Ltd
