Car insurance revisited
One of the lessons in Legislating 101 is that when your bill doesn't have the votes, don't just throw it to the wolves. There's little reason to press ahead with something headed for certain defeat -- take it back to the lab and try to make it something your colleagues can swallow without gagging.State Sen. Tony Rand of Fayetteville hardly needs to be reminded of a rule so elementary. After all, if there were a doctorate in the legislative arts, he'd have about three. So it was no surprise to hear that Rand tactfully has decided to defer a proposal that made many ordinary North Carolinians' hair stand on end. Those would be North Carolinians who buy car insurance, of which there are a bunch. This had been a classic case of moving to fix something that wasn't busted. Rand wanted to take away the state insurance commissioner's authority to set auto insurance rates.
IU Students To Get Car Rental Privileges
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- An agreement between Indiana University and Enterprise Rent-A-Car will allow students under 21 to rent cars for personal use, but the deal comes with many restrictions. To rent a car, students between 18 and 21 years old would have to have full-coverage, low-deductible car insurance and a major credit card in their name. They could only travel in state, could not rent SUVs or luxury cars and could have no more than one passenger. Enterprise, based in St. Louis, is also assessing students a $30 per day surcharge. The service will be reviewed every three months and could be discontinued if Enterprise thinks the risks are too great, according to the contract. .

Motor insurance claims 'stay high in summer'
Drivers were today reminded that they need to stay focused on the road during the summer months if they are to avoid motor insurance claims. It is often thought that conditions for driving are better during the warm weather than they are in the winter, but insurer NFU Mutual has revealed that 40 per cent of its car insurance claims are generated by incidents that occur between May and September.Laura Wood, a spokeswoman for NFU Mutual, said the figures proved that driving in the summer was every bit as risky as at other times of the year, particularly for motorists venturing out of town centres."Rural roads in particular can pose a threat as people may be tempted to put their foot down when they see a clear country lane ahead," said Ms Wood. She added: "A recent government campaign stated that you are three times more likely to die in a car crash on a rural road so due care must be taken."Recent research conducted by Direct Line found that 88 per cent of instructors felt that the current driving test does not do enough to prepare new motorists for the challenge of rural roads.Ten per cent of motorists could save 39.7 per cent or more on their car insurance, a study from last year has shown.© Adfero Ltd Other Recent Motor Insurance ArticlesSlow down to save on motor insurance Education the key for police Suffolk drivers avoiding motor insurance claims .
